Allotments for all

Allotments for all. There are over 200 people onthe Eastleigh waiting list forallotments. We are losing prime sites like South Streetand Woodside and beingoffered motorway embankments in their place.
Allotment gardening is booming. People are turning green by cutting down food miles and growing their own. As an allotment holder in Burns Close, I am in favour of creating more allotment sites in our town.

There are loads of derelict allotments behind the houses in Dutton Lane. No where near a motorway embankment. If there is really a big demand for allotments then why aren't these being used?

These allotment behind Dutton Lane do not belong to Eastleigh Allotment Association according to their map on their website http://www.eastleigh-allotments-association.org.uk/how_to_get_an_allotment.htm. I do not know who they belong to. Perhaps you could find out? One of the important things about allotments is that they should be close to where people live. It takes me about 5-7 minutes to push my wheelbarrow across Fleming park, up Passfield Avenue, along Derby Road and into Burns Close. I wouldn't want to drive through the Eastleigh traffic for 20 minutes to get to Dutton Lane but maybe others would. Allotments need to be local.

Alternatively you could suggest to your MP who has a house in your road that they build some more houses on those derelict allotments. Lib. Dems seem to be keen to build everywhere.

Thanks for your comments. Trust this reply helps.
